With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, you’re sure to see all the tell-tale signs of the Hallmark holiday: TV commercials for jewelry, grocery store shelves overflowing with chocolates, and an abundance of heart-shaped gifts bombarding you every day. If you’re in a happy relationship, February 14th might be one of your favorite days – but if you’re navigating a divorce, it can be one of the worst.

Are you dreading Valentine’s Day in the midst of a divorce? Here are five tips to take control of the day and survive February 14th:

1. Focus on the other types of love in your life

Romantic love isn’t the only thing you can celebrate on Valentine’s Day – celebrate the other people you love in your life! Spend time with parents, siblings, children, or close friends. Just because you are dissolving your marriage doesn’t mean you lack loving relationships altogether.

2. Spoil yourself

There’s no better pick-me-up than treating yourself to something nice. Splurge on something you don’t normally spoil yourself with – like a manicure, a massage, a fancy dinner, or a new pair of shoes. Marriage is hard work – and divorce is even harder. You deserve to sit back, relax, and indulge in something extravagant.

3. Give back

When you’re feeling down about something in your life – especially something as devastating as a divorce – it can help to give back to others and do something good. Check if your local community center, church, or other organization has a volunteer project you can work on. Give your time to an animal shelter or a soup kitchen. Choose something that aligns with your passions.

4. Avoid social media

You might be tempted to scroll through your social media apps, but it’s best to put the phone down. Checking your Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other accounts will probably only make you feel worse. You’ll be bombarded with photos and posts about relationships and love – and you might even be tempted to check in on your ex and see what they are doing on Valentine’s Day. Try deleting your social media apps from your phone temporarily if you have a habit of checking them frequently.

5. Spend the day working on your hobbies

You don’t need a relationship to live a full life and enjoy the things you love. Instead of dwelling on your past relationship, spend the day working on projects and hobbies you enjoy – especially if they are activities you have put on the backburner for a while. Go for a hike, cook a good meal, tend to your garden, knit a blanket, or paint a picture – do anything that sparks passion and makes you feel fulfilled.
